Endowment tower, Sharjah
A residential tower that exists to fund a university, with a perforated screen at street level doing most of the work.
Endowment
AL SHOLA ALMODEA designed, supplied and installed the architectural and exterior lighting on this tower: the podium, the facade features and the external areas around the building. There was no interior package.
The tower is a waqf development in Al Khan, Sharjah. It is a residential building of 31 floors holding 186 apartments and four retail units, and the income it produces goes to Al Qasimia University. That is not a detail about the client; it is the reason the brief looks the way it does.
An endowment building is held for decades by an institution, not traded by a developer. What follows is a preference for schemes that stay correct without attention. Fewer fittings, reachable positions, warm white held at one value, and no effect that depends on a controller somebody has to keep configured. A scheme that needs looking after is a liability on a building meant to generate income quietly for thirty years.
Patterned screens
The podium carries narrow vertical strips of perforated geometric screen set into flat wall panels. In daylight they read as texture, which is what the photograph below shows. After dark they are the only element on the lower building that can become a light source rather than a lit surface.
That distinction decides the whole approach. Lighting a screen from the front flattens it: the light lands on the face, fills the perforations with glare and turns a pattern into a bright rectangle. Lighting it from behind does the opposite. The solid parts stay dark, the holes carry the light, and the pattern reads as itself at any distance.
What makes it work or fail is the cavity. A backlit screen needs enough depth behind it for the source to spread before it reaches the panel, or every fitting shows through as a hot spot and the geometry disappears behind its own lighting. The depth available is set by the architecture long before anyone specifies a fitting, which is why this is a question to ask at the drawing stage and not on site.
The strips are narrow and repeated, which helps. A narrow cavity is easier to fill evenly than a broad one, and a repeated element lets one detail be resolved once and used everywhere. It also means any inconsistency between strips is visible immediately, side by side, so the run is bought as one batch.

The images below are architectural visualisations produced for the development, not photographs. They show the tower as it was drawn and the exterior lighting as it was intended, with the podium screens lit and the tower reading as a vertical marker from the road.
They are worth showing because they state the intent clearly, and worth labelling because a render and a photograph are different kinds of evidence. A visualisation shows what somebody meant. Only a photograph shows what a building actually does after dark, and we do not hold one of this tower lit.
So this page describes the elevation the photograph shows, the screens the architecture provides, and the approach the brief called for. It does not claim a result it cannot show, and the honest position is that a single night photograph would tell you more about this scheme than everything written here.
Podium and street
A high-rise has two audiences and they need different things. From the road the building is an outline and a top, and the only question is whether it registers at all. From the pavement it is a doorway, a canopy and a route to it, and the only question is whether you can see where to go.
The podium is where those meet, and it is the part of a tower that most schemes underspend. Height is cheap to suggest and expensive to deliver. A well-lit base does more for how a building is experienced than anything higher up, because the base is the only part anybody stands next to.
The constraint on the base is glare. Everything at the podium sits close to eye level. A fitting aimed even slightly wrong is looked straight into by every person walking past and every driver on the road beside it. Shielding, aiming angle and mounting height matter more here than output does, and they are settled by standing on the pavement after dark, not by a calculation.
Warm white suits the material. The facade is beige and metallic, and a cool source on a warm stone reads grey and slightly dead. Holding one warm value across the podium, the screens and the external areas is what makes a building look deliberately lit rather than merely illuminated.
