A tower is three buildings, depending on where you are standing

From across the city a tower is an outline. From the approach road it is an elevation with a top and a base. From the pavement outside it, it is a door, a lobby and a lift. Most tower schemes are designed for the first of those and judged by the client on the third.

The thing that separates high-rise work from every other sector, though, is not height. It is repetition. One apartment type is drawn once and then built on every floor it appears on. A downlight spacing that is merely acceptable becomes a whole stack of merely acceptable ceilings, and it costs far more to put right after handover than to settle in a mock-up unit first. On a tower the mock-up is not a nicety; it is the cheapest decision on the job.

Repetition also decides how fittings are bought. White LEDs vary slightly between production runs, and two apartments on the same corridor lit from different batches will not match under a camera or a critical eye. Buying the whole requirement as one batch, and buying the spares with it, is the only reliable answer. A top-up order two years later almost never matches.

Access after handover is the other constraint that only towers have. Anything above the podium means a permit, a booked service lift and often a rope team, so a lamp change is an event rather than a task. In practice that means changes get deferred until several have failed together, which is when a run of lighting starts to look neglected. Maintenance access is designed at the same time as the scheme, or it is not designed at all.

Then there is the mixed-use stack. A single tower can hold a hotel lobby that runs twenty-four hours, serviced apartments occupied unpredictably, an amenity floor that peaks early morning and late evening, and a retail podium on mall hours. Circuiting and scenes that follow the uses rather than the floors are what keep the running cost sensible, and that has to be decided at design stage because it is wiring, not settings.

Some tower commissions are the elevation and nothing else, and some are the whole interior with the elevation belonging to another contractor. Where the work was the elevation alone, the case study sits under facade lighting and the tower is listed in both places.
