Landscape lighting in the UAE
The most common outdoor brief is “light the garden”, and the most common disappointment is a garden that has been lit evenly. Interior lighting is additive: you fill a room to a level. Outdoor lighting is the opposite. The background is black, the eye adapts to whatever is brightest in view, and the first useful decision is which parts of the site are going to stay dark.
It also helps to notice that an outdoor scheme is doing three separate jobs that get confused for one another. Safety is seeing the ground you are about to step on. Wayfinding is knowing where to go next. Appearance is what the place looks like from the house or the road. They want different fittings in different positions, and a scheme designed for one of them rarely does the other two.
Glare behaves differently outside. Indoors there are walls and a ceiling bouncing light around, so a bare source is diluted. Outside there is nothing, so the same fitting becomes a bright point in a black field and the eye goes straight to it instead of to the path. Shielded optics, low mounting heights and narrow beams do more for how a garden feels than any increase in output.
The related problem is light trespass. In a compound, a district or any plot with neighbours, the fitting that lights the path is usually also lighting a bedroom window, and that is the complaint that arrives after handover. Mounting height and cut-off get set by the nearest window, not by the widest part of the path.
Uplighting deserves a word of its own, because it is where most of the waste is. A narrow beam at the base of a trunk lights a tree. A wide flood in the same position lights the tree, the wall behind it, the neighbour’s balcony and a good share of the sky. Upward light that misses its target is simply money leaving the site, which is what dark-sky guidance is really about.
Then the climate. Fifty-degree summers shorten rated life, blown sand finds its way through gaskets that passed a rain test, and anything in a planting bed spends part of every day wet because the irrigation says so. Ingress ratings for external work in this region are chosen for immersion and dust, not for showers.
