Display lighting in the UAE
Retail lighting is the one sector where the building is not the client. The stock is. A showroom lit to a comfortable general level and no further will read as an office with products in it, because nothing on display is any brighter than the floor it stands on.
What creates the sense that something is worth looking at is contrast ratio — the difference between the light on the product and the light on everything around it. A ratio of around three to one reads as emphasis; much less and the display disappears, much more and it starts to feel theatrical. That ratio is a design decision, and it is made by dimming the ambient as much as by aiming the accent.
Vertical illuminance is the number most schemes miss. Merchandise on a wall, a rail or a shelf is seen vertically, and a scheme designed to a horizontal floor target can meet it comfortably while leaving every display wall flat. Vertical surfaces need their own calculation and usually their own fittings.
Colour rendering matters more in retail than in any other sector because the customer is judging the product itself. A finish, a fabric or a paint under a low-CRI source is not the colour it will be at home, and that is a returns problem as much as a display one.
Different merchandise wants different things. Gloss items — cars, glass, polished metal — are read by their reflections, so they want long soft sources overhead that give a clean unbroken highlight rather than spots that give bright discs. Matt items want the opposite: directional light that creates shadow and shows texture.
Then duty cycle. Retail runs long opening hours every day of the week, and accent lighting runs at full output throughout. Rated life at operating temperature stops being a datasheet detail and becomes the basis of the maintenance budget.
Exhibition work adds a constraint retail does not have: the deadline cannot move and access afterwards is effectively impossible. Anything not commissioned before the doors open will not be commissioned.
We work across all seven emirates, with a showroom in Industrial Area 7, Sharjah, and most display work in Dubai.
The work
Recessed linear over the display floor for unbroken reflections, and track spots aimed at an accessory wall that gets rearranged.
Colour-changing lighting on a doubly curved timber gridshell, commissioned node by node before the hoarding came down.
Display lighting
Contrast ratio, aiming and colour rendering all follow from what is being displayed and how it is finished, so the products come before the reflected ceiling plan.
