Villa lighting in the UAE
A villa scheme is really four separate jobs that have to agree with each other. The facade, the landscape, the pool and the interior each have different fittings, different trades and different points in the build at which they have to be decided. Most of what goes wrong on a villa goes wrong because one of the four was left until later than the others.
The facade is the one people picture. It is usually concealed linear work sitting in a soffit or a reveal, drawing the edges of the building. Because the fitting is hidden inside a detail, the detail has to exist before the fitting can go in, which makes the facade the earliest decision on the whole job. Adding it after the render is on means cutting a channel into a finished wall.
The landscape is the most forgiving and the most often underestimated. Uplights at the base of a palm, bollards along a path, in-ground fittings between pavers. The fittings are simple; the ducting is not. It goes in with the irrigation, before the paving is laid, and retro-fitting a floor fitting into finished paving means lifting and relaying it.
The pool is the least reversible. Underwater units are built into the pool wall during construction, before tiling, and the conduit is set at the same time. A pool light decided at fit-out is a pool light that will not be installed.
Inside, the work divides between concealed and decorative. Cove lighting is a plastering operation before it is an electrical one, because the plasterer forms the trough. Recessed downlights need the ceiling void and the setting-out agreed while the ceiling is still open. A chandelier in a double-height space needs a fixing point in the slab and a plan for reaching it again to clean it.
What a villa owner is actually deciding, then, is less about fittings than about timing. The question is not which downlight, but whether the lighting design exists early enough for the builder to leave room for it. On every project below, the answer was yes, and it is the reason the fittings are almost invisible in the photographs.
